Understanding Locked Knees: A Comprehensive Analysis of Causative Pathologies

Introduction:
A locked knee may limit mobility and quality of life, significantly affecting their quality of life. This article investigates the common causes of locked knee and emphasizes the need for appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

Materials and Methods:
This study analyzed 267 knee magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) who presented with knee locking over 5 years. A musculoskeletal radiology consultant and fellow assessed MRI studies for the presence of various causative pathologies. Data analysis was done to compare age, pathologies, and gender distribution in these patients. Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to assess diagnostic performance for each condition. P <0.05 was considered as statistically significant.

Results:
The study demonstrated a significant association between age and medial meniscal tear or patellofemoral joint (PFJ) osteoarthritis (OA). Lateral meniscal tears were not associated with age.

Conclusion:
The findings emphasize the age-related occurrence of medial meniscal tear and PFJ OA, highlighting the importance of age as a causative pathology. The absence of a substantial connection with lateral meniscal tears and the low predictive value of age showcase the complexity of these cases.
