Introduction:  The National Insulin Pump Audit is a joint funded project by Diabetes UK, ABCD and JDRF. As the Cheshire and Merseyside expert reference group for this audit we present the preliminary results for paediatric (children and young persons, CYP) patients.

Aims:  This is the first national audit of insulin pump therapy for CYP in the UK.

Methods:  An online audit of all paediatric insulin pump centres in the UK was conducted. The first phase of the audit looked at service provision.

Results:  For patients < 18 years there were 166 sites participating in the audit representing 94% of all paediatric pump services in the UK. Ten sites did not return data. Data were returned on 5,094 CYP treated with insulin pumps. Centres start an average of 10 CYP per year on insulin pumps. Fifty-one per cent of centres run structured pump education, 93% provide one to one training; 98% of patients are trained by the diabetes specialist nurse, with a pump company representative present in 87%. Out of hours clinical support is provided by pump companies in 37% of centres. Contrary to NICE guidance, only 31% of units routinely trial multiple dose injections in CYP aged 12-18 if started on pumps before the age of 12. Funding for pumps is usually available if the CYP fulfils NICE criteria.

Conclusions:  This is the first national paediatric insulin pump audit. Data were captured from 94% of CYP centres offering pump therapy. Funding is usually available for insulin pumps. Centres need to improve access to structured education and support from clinicians out of hours.
