Abstract

It has been well established that the incidence of melanoma in the UK continues to rise, and that earlier detection leads to overall improved survival. Amongst several prognostic features, primary tumour thickness and regional lymph node status are accepted as the most important.1 Since it was first introduced in 1990 by Morton et al. intraoperative lymphatic mapping and sentinel lymphadenectomy has been increasingly used as a less invasive method of identifying the presence of loco-regional lymphatic spread compared with the historical routine elective lymph node dissection.
