Role models in primary care education

Abstract

Role models are widely acknowledged in medicine, but they have received much less attention than the other two essential elements of effective medical education, planned and organised teaching, and structured experiences. This may be the result of not distinguishing between what students and trainers are taught and what they learning, and negative role modelling encountered during clinical practice may undermine the attitudinal messages of the formal curriculum.
